In Markham, 40.1% of residents report Chinese as their mother tongue and 36.0% report English. Another 10.7% report a South Asian language. Those are 2021 census figures, published by the City of Markham’s own economic development office, and they change what a medical alert system has to get right in this city.

Start with the part that surprises people. Pressing the button carries no language at all. It is a signal, not a sentence, and it reaches our monitoring centre whether the person pressing it is fluent, breathless or unable to speak.

Markham is one of the most diverse cities in Canada. 82.1% of residents identify as a visible minority, and 62,055 residents were 65 or older at the 2021 census. A great many of those older residents do not live alone. They live with adult children, and often with grandchildren.
Living with family gets treated as though it settles the question. It does not. Statistics Canada counted 2.4 million people in multigenerational households in 2021, with 11.6% of people in the Toronto census metropolitan area living in one, the second highest share of any urban area in the country. The same release found these households are far more likely to be crowded, 28.3% against 4.7% of other households, and that 40.5% of the people in them were born outside Canada.
Crowded at seven in the evening. Empty at ten in the morning. Markham’s largest employment sector is professional, scientific and technical services, with 31,290 people working in it according to the 2024 York Region Employment Survey, and those people commute. The grandchildren are at school. Between roughly eight and six on a weekday, the person who was surrounded by family at dinner is alone in a house with stairs. Oak Valley Health runs Markham Stouffville Hospital, Uxbridge Hospital and a Reactivation Care Centre, and reports caring for more than 490,000 patients a year. It is part of the Eastern York Region North Durham Ontario Health Team. Markham Stouffville Hospital offers diagnostic and emergency services and clinical programs in childbirth and children’s health, surgery, acute care medicine, cancer care and mental health. Its surgery department describes short-stay and same-day services in areas including general surgery and orthopaedics. Bedford has no partnership, affiliation or endorsement with Oak Valley Health, and for discharge instructions the hospital’s own material is the place to go.
Same-day orthopaedic surgery is worth pausing on, because it changes where recovery happens. Someone can have a procedure in the morning and be in their own bed by evening. The first difficult night and the first trip to the bathroom on a walker then happen at home, with no call bell on the wall. York Region already does a fair amount here, and it is worth knowing what exists before you buy anything. York Region Paramedic Services distributes Personal Medical Information Kits. Public Health runs Healthy Aging and Fall Prevention material. The Region publishes a Seniors Navigation Guide and says it is committed to supporting seniors to age in the right place. York Region Transit runs On-Request 65+ for riders 65 and over travelling within 5 km of home. The City of Markham works in partnership with five volunteer based Seniors Clubs.
A Personal Medical Information Kit sits in a kitchen waiting for the moment someone else needs it. A monitored button is the same idea one step earlier: it is how somebody gets there to read the kit.
Two shapes cover most situations. Home Freedom is a base station with a pendant or wrist button for use in and around the house, which suits someone whose day happens between the kitchen, the bathroom and the garden. Go Anywhere is a mobile device with GPS, as either a pendant or a watch, for someone still driving to Pacific Mall or walking the Rouge trails.
Fall detection is available on some devices. In general terms it watches for the motion signature of a fall and raises an alert without anyone pressing anything. It follows protocols the family sets and alerts family and caregivers automatically rather than routing to a Bedford operator, and its 24/7 coverage refers to the sensor and its own AI.
Equipment is included with the subscription, so there is no device to buy separately. Plans are month-to-month or annual at your choice, with a three month minimum at the start and optional savings if you commit to six or twelve months up front. After any initial term the service reverts to month-to-month. There are no cancellation fees.
Bedford services are funded or approved under a range of third-party programs. Some Blue Cross plans cover it. So do Veterans Affairs, the ODSP and Passport programs, and various community programs, and Bedford is as likely as any other provider to be approved. That is for those who qualify, and eligibility is decided by the program rather than by us. One honest limit: we cannot take on the application paperwork. Those signups usually arrive through a case worker or a care coordinator, so if you are already working with one, start there.
This is a paid monitoring service. Every plan carries a monthly fee, and the funding programs above reduce that fee for those who qualify rather than removing it.
