Canada’s Caregiver Tax Credit

Solving the Caregiver Crises As a proud Sponsor of Toronto Rehab Foundation/UHN, Bedford attended their Blakely Health Innovation Series Seminar earlier this month. This particular seminar highlighted the ongoing struggles Canadians are enduring in taking care of a vastly growing senior population that is increasing daily. Looking after ageing parents or spouses has taken an emotional, mental and financial toll on their caregivers and the health system. We were surprised to learn, as were most attendees, that the government offers several tax credits available to Canadian caregivers. The senior does not have to live with you to be eligible. Aging Well – OACAO Annual Conference

Extra Security for Seniors in Condos by Bedford

The Bedford Medical Alert Team has visited many condos that offer many amenities and a community for residents to enjoy. Neighbours are nearby to share in activities and they can lend a hand if needed. There is also a concierge desk to provide added assistance and security. With independent living and privacy, however, comes the possibility that residents could be in a situation that does not allow them to access their neighbours or concierge should they need help. If you were to experience a fall and could not reach a phone, or if the fall resulted in lost consciousness, a Bedford Medical Alert system could still get you the assistance you need.

Caring for our Seniors by Bedford

Caring for elderly parents takes a toll on caregivers:

Seniors over 65 represent 17% of Canadians and our Seniors requiring continuing care will rise by 71% by 2026. Our ageing population will live longer, and with strained social services, the children of these seniors will often become primary caregivers. This can take a toll.

Reports have shown that many of these caregivers are stressed to the point of breakdown. The time allocated to looking after their parents is estimated to be $27 billion in out-of-pocket expenses, lost income and vacation time. Many of these caregivers experience worry and guilt for the time they are not able to be there and find it extremely difficult to balance life, work and caregiving.

With the advances in 24/7 Medical Alert Monitoring Services, such as Bedford’s GPS location services and new types of automatic fall detection, caregivers and seniors can gain valuable peace of mind.

Toronto Seniors Staying Active to Stay Independent and Reduce Risk of Falls

In our last blog, “Are You at Risk of a Fall?”, we addressed factors that contributed to an increased risk of falls. As June is seniors month, there is no better time than now to discuss the importance of Toronto seniors leading an active and healthy life to prevent falls.

At Bedford Medical Alert, we know how hard it can be to be active as a senior, especially after falling at home. According to a study done by the University of Alberta, older adults may lose confidence to move around with confidence once they have experienced a fall. As the ice melts and the sun comes out, it is important for Toronto seniors to get active, strengthen their muscles, improve flexibility, and maintain steady balance. Being less active can adversely affect an older adult’s health, independence, and increase risk of future falls.

How to Stay Active After a Fall

Talk to your doctor to find out the best activities for you
Do activities you enjoy- walking in the park, aquatics, and dancing are great starts.

Stay social
Reduce risk of falling by removing clutter from around the house and tying down rugs

Bedford Medical Alert: Lessons from the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) Conference in Toronto

The Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) promotes a “strong, sustainable home and community support sector for all Ontarians.” The OCSA not-for-profit “community-based member organizations provide a wide variety of health and wellness services which help a full range of clients, including seniors and people with disabilities, remain independent in their own homes and communities.” This mission very closely reflects that of Bedford Medical Alert, which is why Bedford is a member of the OCSA.

At the Annual OCSA Annual Conference in Toronto, Bedford Medical Alert learned from several experts about the “need to prepare for, adapt to and thrive within a new health care landscape.” In Toronto and in Ontario, and across Canada, the number of individuals requiring care is rising faster than the number of individuals who can provide care. Bedford Medical Alert believes, upon learning from the OCSA event speakers, that technology such as Medical Alert systems, or Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS), when properly accompanied by other community care, is an important way to help seniors live vibrant and active lives in their community.
