The storm that matters is rarely the one on the news. It is the freezing rain that arrives on a weeknight, takes the power out on one side of the street, and leaves a parent alone in a cooling house. Canada’s own preparedness pages are written for exactly that night. This post sets out what they ask an older adult’s household to have ready, and where a monitored alert fits in the plan.
Type “medical alert” into a phone company’s website and you can come away more confused than when you started. The question reaches us in two shapes: does the alert have to come from the company that provides the home phone, and is there a medical alert already sitting inside a TV, internet or mobile bundle? The first icy morning of the season tends to arrive before anyone has found the good boots. For an older adult, that morning carries more risk than it looks: the walk to the mailbox, the two steps down from the side door, the bus stop that nobody has sanded yet. It usually starts on the highway. Three hours each way to fix a running toilet, sit in on a specialist appointment or check why your father has not been answering the phone. Somewhere around the third trip in a month, someone says it out loud: what if he lived ten minutes from us?
Often it comes out sideways. Your mother mentions, a week after the fact, that she “had a little tumble” by the back door, got herself up, and is fine. No bruise worth showing. No trip to the emergency department. She would rather talk about something else.
Families ask this one early, usually right after “does she need a cell phone?” and right before “what if the power goes out?” The short answer is no. When a family sets up monitoring with us, the conversation is almost always with the adult children. They give us the address, the contact numbers, the notes about which door sticks and where the spare key lives. Somewhere in that house there is often a fifteen year old who set up the tablet, fixed the Wi-Fi twice, and knows the passcode. Nobody thinks to ask what that person could do.
Most of the calls we take start after a scare. A fall in the hallway, a hospital discharge, a daughter in another province who could not reach her father for two days. In those conversations families often say some version of the same thing: everything about getting old in this country is getting worse.
In 2018 the US Preventive Services Task Force told clinicians not to use vitamin D supplements to prevent falls in adults over 65. In its update of 4 June 2024 the Task Force removed the question from the falls guideline altogether, and the review meant to settle it is still listed as in progress.
There is a question that almost never comes up first. It arrives near the end of a call, usually from the person who will actually wear the device rather than the adult child arranging it, and it is nearly always phrased as an apology.
